BENEFITS OF retrofit LED

  • Long Lasting – LED’s can last up to  50 times as long as comparable incandescent and halogen bulbs.
  • Cool – LED’s produce 3.4 btu’s/hour, compared to 85 btu’s/hour for incandescent
  • Efficient – LED’s use 25% less energy compared to a standard halogen bulb
  • Modular LED – convert existing ligting systems using the LED Retrofit Lamps without replacing the entire system, with the confidence of a full recovery of the investment. Approximate recovery of the initial investment will range with the hours used, and the initial cost of the lamps and labor saved in repalcing the older lamps but typicall range between 12-24 months
  • Internal Design –  LED’s are engineered for optimal use within an enclosed landscape lighting fixture.
  • Flexibility – LED systems that encapsulate the LED Emitter in the body of the fixture limit the ability to change a beam spread, or decrease or increase lumen output as landscape specimens grow on the project. In integrated LED fixtures,  the entire fixture needs to be replaced when trees outgrow the original product supplied, giving the owner a very expensive and inflexible proposition.

Lighting Objective

Spot lights are probably the most versatile fixtures available in the lighting designers toolbox. Their main function is to direct a more controlled beam of light to whatever it is they are being used to light. The fact that they are directional means that they can be used to light an object directly in front of them at the same level or something straight above them.

Lighting Challenges

  1. Choosing a style: there are so many different styles available that will perform basically the same function, but with a different form factor
  2. Lamp selection:The spot light uses an MR16 or PAR36 lamp (in bigger versions). Knowing which lamp to choose for your particular application can be daunting.
  3. Spacing and placement: knowing how and where to place them in relation to trees and architecture to eliminate black holes and hot spots.
  4. Glare: Directional spot lights are the number one source of glare in the landscape. Great care must be taken in the placement and aim to keep light out of windows and the eyes of passers by.

 Advantages

  1. Versatile: These fixtures can be adjusted and aimed anywhere on a 90 degree axis
  2. Easy to install: Simply add a stake and lamp
  3. Huge lamp selection: uses MR16 and PAR36 lamps (in bigger versions), two of the most prolific lamps on the market with the most variety in lumen output and beam spread. This gives the lighting designer much more creative control over the light.
  4. Compact size: spot lights are small and easy to hide in the landscape, making them a great choice for many applications.

Summary

Down lighting offers a very unique and highly attractive lighting effect to the nighttime scene. It looks best when used in conjunction with up lighting to eliminate the “hot spot” in the trees to help disguise the source. Mounting locations can be varied from tall trees to structures such as pergolas and roof lines. The biggest advantage is being able to use fewer luminaires to light a much broader area without the use of path lights cluttering up the landscape.
